The more people referring others to you for business, the more business you receive. The more people referring and talking about your business, the more of an authority your are seen for your service.

Things work the same on the web. The more referals (links to your website) that search engines find, the more importance and authority search engines place on your website for your service and the more referals (traffic) they will send.
